As only a very small percentage of the population is Christian, Christmas is not widely celebrated in Thailand. New Years, however, is very important. Thais welcome the new year with music, dance, and good food. On the first morning of the new year, many people will go to a Buddhist temple, for religious ceremonies and making offerings. In Bangkok, hundreds of thousands of people gather at Central World, one of SE Asia’s largest shopping malls. People bring their families to enjoy stage shows, music, lights, food, drink and a pretty fantastic fireworks show at midnight. You can also head to the Chao Phraya River for another fireworks show that sets off over the water. In Chiang Mai, in Northern Thailand, celebrations include lighting and releasing paper lanterns, called khom loy. These beautiful lanterns create a fantastic sight as they all float in the sky simultaneously. New years is an awesome time to visit Thailand, because of massive celebrations around the country. You can enjoy the holiday in the city, or on the beaches on Phuket or other islands for a real party. Have you ever spent New Years in Thailand? Consider booking a trip to enjoy the culture of Thailand during this special time.
