If you have ever visited Thailand, you know how much the locals love their street food, as do the tourists. Finding the balance of the 4 main flavors Thai food is so well known for; salty, sweet, sour, spicy, is the goal of every Thai food chef, but the street vendors offer a totally different experience for your tastebuds and should not be missed. Here are a few you should definitely try on your next vacation to Thailand.

Malang Tod “Fried Insects”

If you ever wondered what an insect tastes like, you will not have to wonder anymore. Malang Tod (fried insects) is an afternoon snack enjoyed with beer or liquor. These crispy critters (crickets, grasshoppers and even worms) are usually fried in pepper as well as soy or fish sauce. It may not agree with everyone’s pallet but differently an experience you won’t get anywhere else.

Gai Yang “Grilled Chicken”

One of the favorites of Thai street food, you will not have a problem finding this smoky and delicious chicken while you are visiting. Usually accompanied by sticky rice and som-tam, you do not want to miss the favorite among both tourists and locals.

Khao Niow Ma Muang (Mango with Sticky Rice)

This classically delicious springtime treat, readily available in April and May, incorporates sweetly ripe mangos on a bed of sticky rice, topped with coconut cream and kissed with a splash of condensed milk. A delicious treat to enjoy during the hot spring months.

Tom Yum Goong (Spicy Shrimp Soup)

Probably the most favorite food in Thailand (so popular that it even has a rom-com named after it!) is an incredibly delicious soup teaming with shrimp, tomatoes, mushrooms, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and galangal. You can choose from a thick and sweet coconut milk based broth or without for a lower calorie and slightly tangier option. This will definitely deliver all the flavors of Thailand with every tantalizing spoonful.
